Had a revision hip replacement in December 2019 at Derby Royal Hospital, performed by James Hutchinson and his team. James was helpful describing the procedure pre op and supportive post op, a great “bedside manner”. The surgery and recovery has gone really well.
Also thanks to the ward staff (ward 206), they seemed genuinely happy with the work they were doing and professional as you would expect.
Even the food on the ward was good (lasagna and chicken dinner

Had a total hip replacement performed by Mr. Hutchinson twelve months ago. The care I received was second to none I was treated with kindness ans understanding at all times. I am now completely pain free and back to full fitness.

I have had two knee replacements over the last 7 months, i am really pleased with the way that the operations went, this was down to the skill of Mr Hutchinson and his team and the aftercare provided by the nursing staff at the hospital, I am now pain free after several years, anyone waiting for the same operation should have no worries as it will make your quality of life so much better.

In 2014 I was experiencing severe pain in my right hip whilst doing a very strenuous job.
After consulting my GP and seeing a physiotherapist, I was advised that surgery was the only option.
That prospect filled me with dread !!
The operation was carried out by Mr. Hutchinson within 6 weeks and everything went well.
I spent 6 weeks recuperating and in that time I had no pain whatsoever and gradually recovered full mobility.
I cannot express in words the joy of being pain-free after such a long time.
The ease with which the whole process was carried out is, in my opinion, a reflection of the expertise of Mr Hutchinson.
I owe him so much for the quality he brought back to my life.
Unfortunately, my left hip is very painful now and needs replacing.
I am naturally apprehensive about going through the same procedure, but delighted that
Mr Hutchinson will be doing the operation for me.
If you are scheduled to have a hip replacement, I hope you are also fortunate enough to have the operation performed by Mr Hutchinson.
I will be eternally grateful to him and I cannot thank him enough.

Mr James Hutchinson operated on both of my hips within ten months, of each other, my last operation was the 3rd December 2019. I found him very approachable and professional and he listened to my concerns and answered all of my questions which put me at ease. I did not feel a bit nervous about the operation because I trusted Mr Hutchinson and would recommend him 100%. My operation was a huge success and for once in eight years I can walk without pain.

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Royal Derby Hospital and Derby Nuffield Hospital. I have been in my current post since 2002.
I specialise in primary hip and knee replacement, revision hip replacement and the management of periprosthetic fractures.
My medical school training was at The Queens College , University of Oxford and Addenbrookes Hospital, University of Cambridge. I carried out additional training in complex hip and knee surgery during a 12 month Fellowship in Perth, Western Australia.
I submit all my cases to the National Joint Registry and the outcomes of my last 3000 joint replacement cases put me in the top 5% of UK surgeons in terms of revision rate.
Hip and knee replacement is a real passion of mine- I firmly believe you only live once and that well performed hip and knee replacement prolongs good function and improves quality of life.
